BASTIAN –– Grayson County found itself in unfamiliar territory early in its Mountain Empire District game Friday at Bland County. The atmosphere was much more recognizable soon enough.
Trailing the Bears 7-6 after each team’s initial possession, the Blue Devils piled up 42 unanswered points before the end of the half and skated home with a 56-13 win at Dillow Memorial Field.
Xavier Rodriguez darted in from 14 yards away to cap the opening possession for Grayson County (7-0 overall, 2-0 MED). The PAT attempt failed, giving the Bears (2-5, 1-1) the rare opportunity to take a lead against the No. 1-ranked team in Group A.
Bland County took advantage and scored less than two minutes later on a four-yard run by Jacob Haun, and the PAT had Bland holding a 7-6 lead with 8:32 left in the opening period.
Fun while it lasted, the lead didn’t survive for long. The Blue Devils scored on their next six possessions, including a three-touchdown flurry in the final 4:49 of the half, to take a 49-7 lead into the half.
Max Rodgers opened the onslaught with a 1-yard plunge, and Rodriguez ran in for the two-point PAT and a 14-7 Grayson lead at 6:22 of the first.
Rodriguez tallied his second TD of the opening quarter with a 41-yard sprint and Mario Ruiz was true on the first of six straight conversion kicks.
Spencer Roberts scored on a 25-yard run early in the second quarter for a 28-7 lead, and a series of Bland turnovers allowed the Blue Devils to close the half with a bang. Rodgers tossed a 25-yard scoring pass to Mikey Rodgers at the 4:49 mark of the second quarter, and a Bears fumble put Grayson right back in business. Roberts grabbed a 22-yard scoring toss from Max Rodgers with 2:47 left in the half, and another lost fumble allowed the Blue Devils to add a 14-yard Rodriguez scoring run for a 49-7 lead with 1:36 left before intermission.
James Williams scooted in from 22 yards out late in the third quarter to cap Grayson’s scoring.
Bland County added a Ray Ray Holston touchdown run of 45 yards early in the fourth quarter.
Grayson County rolled up 491 yards of total offense, including 375 yards on the ground. Rodriguez carried 11 times for 142 yards, Jarel Smith added 74 yards on five rushes and Williams tossed in 48 yards on three tries.
Max Rodgers was 4-of-5 passing for 116 yards, including three connections with Mikey Rodgers for 95 yards.
