HAZARD, Ky. –– Following a drive of nearly four hours, Grayson County was greeted by a 19-point first-quarter outpouring by one of Kentucky’s top small-school teams, falling 47-16 to Hazard in a nondistrict game at Daniel Stadium.

The Bulldogs (5-1), ranked No. 6 among Kentucky 1A schools, scored on every possession through the first three quarters to deal the Blue Devils their sixth straight defeat without a win.

A 47-yard punt return by Greg Adams left Hazard just 9 yards to go for its initial touchdown, which came via a quarterback keeper by Tyler Olinger from the 2-yard line at 9:13 of the first quarter.

The Bulldogs’ second score was just as quick, although considerably longer, as Austin Blanton hauled in an Olinger pass and raced 90 yards for a 13-0 lead.

Adams added a 24-yard scoring run near the end of the period to give the Bulldogs a 19-0 lead heading into the second period.

Adams scored on a 7-yard run and Zack Blanton added a 13-yard TD run, with Austin Delpont booting the PATs, as Hazard took a 33-0 halftime lead.

The margin grew to 47-0 in the third. Adams scored his third touchdown of the evening, this one on a 36-yard run, and Alex Hall grabbed a 40-yard scoring toss from Olinger at 7:25 of the third.

Grayson County closed it out with a pair of touchdown runs by Rusty Williams, seeing his first action since a preseason injury. Williams scored on a 5-yard run late in the third quarter, with Omar Larreta adding the two-point conversion, and Williams dashed in from the 6 with 4:50 to play. He tacked on the two-point conversion for the final margin.

Hazard came up short of the 550 yards of total offense it had averaged through the first five games, finishing with 389 total yards, including 242 yards on just five pass completions by Olinger. Adams had 128 yards on nine carries.

Grayson County got 139 yards from Williams, who carried 24 times. Ben Osborne was 5-of-9 passing for 107 yards and no interceptions. Nate Crowley had two catches for 46 yards and Jason Thompson had two for 44 yards.

The Blue Devils open Mountain Empire District play this Friday at Galax.
