Grayson County keeps rolling in MED

INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County had little trouble maintaining its hold on the Mountain Empire District’s No. 1 spot, cruising past Fort Chiswell in three sets Thursday, 25-13, 25-14, 25-14.

The Blue Devils’ biggest deficit of the night was two points early in the second set, and Grayson (11-1 overall, 5-0 MED) otherwise commanded the Pioneers from start to finish. 

The Blue Devils scored seven of the match’s first nine points and pulled away from a 15-11 score by finishing with a 10-2 run, including back-to-back kills by Madison Shupe to end the first set.

Tied 9-9 in the second, Grayson got some separation with a 7-1 run keyed by three kills from Camryn McGrady. The Devils scored the final eight points of the set, including a pair of Shupe spikes.

Fort pulled from an 8-2 deficit to within 9-8 in the third before Grayson stepped on the gas with a 9-1 run. Shupe and McGrady each had two kills in the rally, while Destiny Shupe and Mary Meier added a pair of kills down the stretch for the Devils.

McGrady and Madison Shupe combined for 20 kills on the night.

Galax def. Rural Retreat 3-0: The Maroon Tide took its last venture out of the district and pounded the Indians 25-6, 25-12, 25-12 Wednesday in Galax.

Susan Davis peppered Rural Retreat with 11 aces and put up 18 assists for the Maroon Tide, which also got eight kills and seven digs from Lindsey Ayers. 

Carroll Co. def. Marion 3-2: The Cavaliers trailed in the fifth set before rallying for the 19-25, 25-16, 17-25, 25-21, 15-9 win last Thursday.

Carroll County (9-3, 2-0) won for the eighth straight outing and dealt the Scarlet Hurricane its first loss after 11 wins to open the season.

Eustacia Smith had a big night at the net with 19 kills and three blocks while Autumn Hill added eight kills. Jessica Sheek served for 20 points, including three aces, and Rachel Farmer had four blocks.

Megan Alderman had 17 digs and 24 assists while Grace Lindsey added 15 digs and 13 assists.

Bailey Ratliff and Callie Mellinger put away 16 kills apiece for Marion.
