By The Gazette

THE PLAINS –– Led by an all-state effort from Mary Beth Cunningham, Grayson County took fourth place in the team competition at the Group 2A state cross country championships, held Saturday at the Great Meadows course.

Cunningham, a sophomore, placed ninth in the field to pace the Blue Devils, covering the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 55 seconds.

Grayson County finished with 119 points, holding off Strasburg for the No. 4 spot. George Mason was second overall with 90 points and Floyd County finished third with 99.

Nobody was catching Maggie Walker. The Governor’s school in Richmond captured the top three individual finishing positions and five of the top 12 to compile a miniscule team score of 23 points. The Dragons were so deep that their No. 6 runner, whose finish didn’t count toward the team score, still earned all-state honors by placing 13th.

Emma Wyatt helped the Blue Devils to their strong team finish by placing 31st in 21:12, followed by Kayla Osborne (38th, 21:30), Olivia Wyatt (44th, 21:46) and Natalie Ruiz (49th, 22:02).

All five Galax runners finished within 86 seconds of one another, led by Megan Boyles with a 45th-place finish in 23:01. She was followed by Keely DeZern (23:20), Lindsey Ayers (24:01), Ashley Jordan (24:06) and Kelsey Williams (24:28).
