Grayson County girls barely miss chance at first victory

 INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County came within a whisker of snapping a 42-game losing streak but fell to Holston 39-37 in a nondistrict girls’ basketball game Wednesday.

Holston (4-5), which had ended its own string of 100-plus straight defeats earlier in the year, took a two-point lead on Faith Ritchie’s free throw with 18 seconds remaining.

Grayson County (0-7) had a chance to send the game into overtime but was off the mark at the buzzer.

Taylor Doss led the Cavaliers with 10 points. Catherine Vaughan’s nine points and 11 rebounds paced Grayson County.

Carroll County 64, Pulaski County 54:Shyann Dalton’s career night helped the Cavaliers avenge a three-point loss to the Cougars with a nondistrict win Wednesday in Dublin.

Dalton poured in 19 points to lead the Cavaliers, who went 14-of-16 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to hold its lead.

Rachel Dalton added 15 points for Carroll County, which won for the fifth straight time after an 0-3 start.

Raiven Patterson led Pulaski County (8-3) with 22 points.

W. Stokes, N.C. 46, Galax 33: A slow first and fourth quarter by the Maroon Tide resulted in a nondistrict loss to the Wildcats in the Alleghany Showcase in Sparta.

Galax (4-5) was outscored a combined 26-10 in the bookend quarters.

Hailey Cassell led the Maroon Tide with 10 points. Makala Bozman led all scorers with 12 points for Stokes, which got 10 points from Christine Madigan.

Galax 69, Graham 57:The Maroon Tide surged out to a 13-point halftime lead and knocked off the G-Men in a nondistrict game Wednesday in Galax.

Deion George led a balanced Galax scoring attack that saw seven players score between seven and 13 points. Justin Hash added 11 points and Austin Pack chipped in 10.

Euneke Diaz scored 16 points for Graham to lead all scorers.

Starmount, N.C. 63, Galax 47: The Maroon Tide suffered its first loss of the season as the Rams won the first and fourth periods by a combined 35-17 margin at the Alleghany Showcase last week in Sparta.

Jake Barr poured in 21 points to lead Starmount (6-2) while  Dillon Dobson added 11.

Brock Cox knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with 10 points to lead Galax (5-1).
