Grayson County gets the point

The Blue Devils’ first attempted PAT kick in two years was the difference in a 7-6 win over Bland.

BASTIAN -- Grayson County picked a pretty opportune time to begin kicking its PATs again.

The Blue Devils, who hadn’t even attempted a one-point conversion since the 2007 season, used Mario Ruiz’s point after for the difference in their 7-6 Mountain Empire District win Friday over Bland County. Grayson County (2-6 overall, 2-0 MED) got all the points it would need on its first offensive series when quarterback Ethan Hash found Jason Thompson open on a 39-yard scoring toss just a minute, 48 seconds into the game. Ruiz booted the PAT and the Blue Devils were ahead to stay, 7-0. Defending MED champion Bland County (2-7, 0-3) got on the board late in the half as Dylan Kidd connected with Raymond Greene for a 24-yard touchdown pass with six seconds remaining in the half, but the Bears’ PAT kick boinked off the upright, leaving Bland trailing 7-6 at the half. Bland County drove deep into Grayson County territory in the third quarter, but Omar Larreta picked off a Kidd pass at his own 5-yard line to end the threat. The remainder of the game was played between the 20-yard lines. Grayson County relied on its ground game for the second outing in a row, rushing 44 times for 132 yards. Hash and Larreta led the way with 53 yards each, Hash’s coming on 16 carries while Larreta had 21 attempts. Hash was also 4-of-7 through the air for 59 yards and one interception. Eric Harvey had three catches for 20 yards for the Blue Devils. Bland County got 53 yards on 16 rushing attempts by Jacob Lambert, while Kidd completed 7-of-17 passes for 129 yards and the one interception. Greene had three catches for 81 yards to lead the Bears’ receivers. Grayson County, winner of two straight, will close out its regular season with a pair of home games, hosting Narrows this week before welcoming league-leading Fort Chiswell on Nov. 6.   Grayson County    7  0  0  0––7 Bland County       0  6  0  0––6
