Grayson Co. claims MED crowns

 INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County put the finishing touches on an unblemished run through its Mountain Empire District baseball schedule, locking up the regular season title Wednesday with a 14-0 win at Graham before trouncing Narrows 16-1 Thursday at home.

Ty Cannaday and Dylan Isom combined for a five-inning no-hitter against the G-Men at Graham Middle School. Cannaday worked the first four innings, striking out six and walking none, while Isom finished the job.

Grayson took a 5-0 lead after two innings, getting RBI singles from Matt Cornett and Cannaday in the first and a two-run Lucas Rudy double in the second. Landon Frost roped a two-run triple as part of a five-run fourth inning for Grayson County, which tacked on four more runs in the top of the fifth.

Isom went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Devils, who got two hits from Rudy and Cannaday.

Grayson Co. 16, Narrows 1: The Blue Devils (12-7 overall, 10-0 district) coupled nine hits with 11 walks Thursday to roll over the Green Wave in five innings.

The win was Grayson’s 12th in 14 games after an 0-5 start and marked the ninth time in those 12 wins that the Devils reached double figures in the scoring column.

Four walks helped Grayson take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, and the Devils broke the game open with a six-run third.

Nine different Blue Devils had one hit apiece. Gavin Bailey allowed one run in three innings to earn the win, with Cornett shutting the door with two scoreless innings of relief.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Galax 6, Bland County 3: The Maroon Tide earned a share of the Mountain Empire District top spot with the win Tuesday in Bland.

Galax finished the regular season tied with Graham for No. 1 in the MED. A playoff for the season title and the district’s lone Region C spot was scheduled for Saturday at George Wythe High School.

Galax was spotted a pair of team points via Bland County forfeits at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, and won four of the seven contested matches. Claire Engelhardt, Paige Hanks and Taylor Bryant all won their singles matches while Hanks and Susan Davis teams for a doubles win.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Grayson County 8, Graham 1: The Blue Devils wrapped up an undefeated season and their second straight MED season championship Tuesday with an easy win over the G-Men in Bluefield.

Grayson County locked up the team win with five singles victories, from Gavin Bailey, Mike Vaughan, Grayson Holdaway, Jake Parnell and Brent Hawks.

Bailey-Vaughan, Holdaway-Parnell and Hawks-Brewer all won in doubles play.

Grayson County will host the Pioneer District champions May 29 in the Region C semifinals, beginning at 9 a.m. The region’s singles and doubles tournaments will be held at Wytheville Community College on May 21 starting at 4:30.
