Grayson, Carroll boys open with easy wins

 INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County used a 10-point edge in the third period to break out to a 19-point lead and the Blue Devils opened their 2012-13 season with a 67-45 nondistrict win Friday over Alleghany, N.C.

Leading 31-22 at the half, Grayson County opened the second half on a tear and pulled out to a 54-35 lead by the start of the fourth quarter.

Mikey Rodgers scored 20 points to lead all scorers while Adam Wyatt and Ty Cannaday each chipped in 11 points for the Blue Devils. Fabian Santos led Alleghany (0-2) with 15 points.

Carroll County 82, Patrick County 33: The Cavaliers dominated from the outset and opened their season with an easy nondistrict win Friday in Stuart.

Opening up a 22-7 lead after the first quarter, Carroll County widened the gap to 44-15 by halftime, then outscored the Cougars 27-2 in the third quarter for a 71-17 lead entering the fourth.

Connor Lundy led 13 Cavaliers in the scoring column with 21 points and Cody Keith scored 11. Nobody reached double figures for Patrick County, which had snapped a 49-game losing streak the night before.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Carroll County 49, Patrick County 46: Crysta Guynn put the Cavaliers in front to stay with a late 3-pointer, and Carroll County avenged a season-opening loss, picking up its first win of the year in a nondistrict game Friday in Hillsville.

Guynn had three of the Cavaliers’ seven 3-pointers and finished with 10 points. Taylor Martin also scored 10 for Carroll County.

Ebony Reynolds scored 12 points to lead Patrick County (2-1).

Grayson County 57,  Alleghany, NC 46: The Blue Devils obliterated the Trojans in the fourth quarter and stormed from behind to take the nondistrict win Friday in Independence.

Trailing 34-31 entering the fourth quarter, Grayson County (2-0) outscored Alleghany 26-9 in the final eight minutes to win going away.

Camryn McGrady and Madison Shupe led the charge with a combined 17 points in the fourth. Shupe paced Grayson County with 25 points and 10 rebounds while McGrady finished with 17 points and 14 boards. Mia Sprinkle and Laken Blevins led Alleghany (0-2) with 15 points each.

Grayson County 60, Northwood 47: The Blue Devils got a balanced offensive attack and opened their season with a 13-point win Wednesday in Saltville.

Camryn McGrady led three Grayson County scorers in double figures with 15 points to go with five rebounds and five blocks. Meredith Frost scored 14 points and Sarah Eller sank three 3-pointers and added 13 points.

Autumn Halsey dished out nine assists while Madison Shupe chipped in with nine points, six rebounds and five steals.
