Having opened the season by splitting a pair of games against Rural Retreat back in December, Galax showed how far it has progressed Tuesday with a 59-22 win over the Indians in the Region C Division 1 girls’ quarterfinals.
The Maroon Tide has come a long way, but it has a little farther to go.
“We’re still quite a way from where we want to be,” Tide coach Yerrick Stoneman said. “If we can get one more win we’ll be a lot closer.”
Third-seeded Galax (16-9) faced No. 2 Northwood on Thursday in the region semifinals, with the winner advancing to Saturday’s title game and earning a state tournament berth.
The Maroon Tide roared out of the gates and opened up a 30-8 lead by halftime as Sydney Lindsey scored all 21 of her points in the first half.
“Our pressure really was a factor,” Stoneman said. “She scored eight of our first 10 points and they were all on layups and putbacks, so defensively we played about as well as we have played in a while.”
Carolyn Vaughan added 10 points for the Maroon Tide, which got between four and six points each from five other players.
Rural Retreat’s season ended at 10-15.

No. 6 Floyd County (19-7) was a tough first-round draw for third-seeded Grayson (18-6), having already knocked off the Blue Devils 80-72 earlier in the year, but the Mountain Empire District champions took a 37-30 lead into the half and never trailed again.
