INDEPENDENCE — The Grayson County School Board will begin the process of hiring a new school system leader by seeking public input on qualifications for a new superintendent.
Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Thomas announced in January her intention to retire at the end of the 2011-12 school year, saying that the early announcement would allow the school board ample time to recruit and select the best candidate for the job.
Thomas has served as superintendent for six years.
The school board plans to solicit public input through an online survey and during a public hearing scheduled for 6:30 p.m. March 12 in the Grayson County Courthouse boardroom.
Surveys related to superintendent criteria will be available on the Grayson County Public Schools’ website, www.Grayson.k12.va.us. Extra copies of the survey also will be available at each school and the central office on Main Street in Independence.
Surveys must be completed and submitted by March 19.
“Hiring a new superintendent is the biggest task facing a school board, and we want to make sure that the public has a voice in this process,” said Grayson School Board Chairman Hobert Bailey. “We hope that parents, staff and residents will take time to fill out the survey or attend the public hearing.”
