Gravley leads all-SWD voting

-A A +A

Austin, Funk and Hawks named top coaches; six players tabbed first-team all-district.

HILLSVILLE –– There’s no good reason anyone should question Ryan Gravley’s being chosen as the 2012-13 Southwest District player of the year. But should a dissenting opinion arise, the Carroll County senior can always reply that he had a better year than the kid who won it last year.

Gravley, who also happens to be that kid who won it last year, was voted the district’s top player for the second year in a row, leading a list of six Twin County players and three coaches named to their respective boys’ or girls’ first teams.

A total of 28 area players picked up all-district recognition in some form, either on the first or second team or as an honorable mention pick, while Carroll County’s Brad Hawks and Grayson County’s Lucas Austin and Tiny Funk were each honored as the coach of the year in his district.

Gravley was probably the easiest choice among them. The reigning SWD player of the year did nothing to tarnish his reputation this season, averaging 15.2 points and 4.3 assists per game, moving to shooting guard after spending his junior year at point.

A potent scorer off the dribble, Gravley had no fear of taking the ball in amongst the big guys and was also a solid outside threat, shooting 43.3 percent from the floor. He was also 141-for-168 from the foul line, or 83.9-percent.

Hawks earned his second straight SWD boys’ coach of the year award, leading Carroll County to an 8-0 league record for the second consecutive season and a 21-1 regular season mark.

Second-team all-SWD players for Carroll were Gunnar Beamer (7.9 ppg, 4.1 apg) and Connor Lundy (11.3 ppg). Austin Horton, Cody Keith, Duncan Reece and Chris Smoot were all honorable mention choices.

Austin was tabbed the Mountain Empire District boys’ coach of the year as the Blue Devils claimed a tough battle for the league’s regular season championship.

Max Rodgers was the only Twin County player named to the MED boys’ first team. Rodgers averaged 15.6 points and 7.3 rebounds during the regular season, shooting 50 percent from the floor.

Second-team picks were Ty Cannaday and Mikey Rodgers of Grayson County. Galax’s Steven Peoples and Chandler Quesenberry were honorable mention picks, as were Grayson’s Lucas Rudy and Adam Wyatt. Bland County’s Asher Dillow was the district’s player of the year.

Three of the five first-team all-MED girls played for Twin County teams, and all are sophomores. Sydney Lindsey averaged a double-double for the season, putting up 12.5 points and 12.3 rebounds per night, shooting 47.7 percent from the floor.

Camryn McGrady and Madison Shupe were a solid 1-2 post combination for Grayson County. McGrady averaged 13.8 points per game and Shupe scored 11.7 per night. Both averaged 9.7 rebounds.

Funk was honored as the MED girls’ coach of the year after guiding the sophomore-laden Blue Devils to the regular season and tournament titles.

Carolyn Vaughan of Galax (8.6 ppg) and Grayson’s Meredith Frost (9.8 ppg) were second-team choices. Honorable mention picks included Sarah Eller and Autumn Halsey of Grayson and Galax’s Susan Davis and Paige Hanks. Fort Chiswell’s Sarah Whisman was the MED’s player of the year.

In SWD girls’ balloting, Taylor Martin of Carroll County earned a spot on the first team, averaging 8.3 points and 4.9 assists per game. Machala Hash (8.3 ppg) and Rachel Sellers (5.8 ppg, 5.9 rpg) were both named to the second team for Carroll while Crysta Guynn and Hayden Caldwell earned honorable mention status.

Richlands’ Brittany Allen was the SWD player of the year and her coach, Dennis Palmer, was the coach of the year.
