Graham hands Tide girls MED loss

Galax’s top doubles tandem remained undefeated on the year but Graham easily took the team win, knocking off the Maroon Tide 8-1 in a Mountain Empire District girls’ tennis match Thursday at Felts Park.

The two teams started the afternoon in doubles, and the Maroon Tide duo of Hanks and Davis bounced back from a close 7-5 loss in the first set to score a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over the G-Girls’ Caitlin Williams and Rebecca Day.

Haley Sheets and Nicole Gabe won at No. 2 doubles for Graham, taking a hard-fought 9-7 win over Claire Engelhardt and Sydney Lindsey, and No. 3 team of Misbah Muzzafer and Mykenzie Roach was victorious for Graham.

In the No. 1 singles match, Williams fought through a pair of match points for Hanks in the second set, winning the set with a 7-4 tiebreaker and eventually winning the team point with a 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 win.

 

SOFTBALL

Grayson County 10, Fort Chiswell 0: Sarah Eller twirled a five-inning perfect game as the Blue Devils remained unbeaten in MED play with the five-inning win Friday in Independence.

Eller struck out five Pioneers on the day. Grayson County pitching has allowed just two baserunners over the past 12 innings of play.

Karly Morris went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Blue Devils while Brady Cassell and Hayley Lawrence each had two hits and an RBI.

Grayson County led 3-1 before putting the game away with a five-run rally in the bottom of the fourth.

Carroll County 19, Galax 2: The Cavaliers used a 10-run second inning to take a 15-2 lead and coasted to the nondistrict win Thursday night at the Carroll County Recreation Park.

Seven Cavaliers had at least two hits each, led by Eden Durnil’s 3-for-3, two-RBI day. Gracie Lindsey, Tiffany Moore, Eustacia Smith, Cheyenne Strickland, Kayla Walker and Kaitlan Farmer added two hits each for the Cavaliers. Smith drove in four runs while Moore and Strickland had three RBIs each for Carroll (9-5). Lindsey tacked on a pair of RBIs.

Durnil pitched five strong innings for the win, giving up two earned runs on four hits, striking out five. Taylor Cummings had one of Galax’s hits and drove in two runs.

 

BOYS’ SOCCER

Grayson County 7, Fort Chiswell 1: Adam Wyatt tallied three goals to lead the Blue Devils to a Mountain Empire District road win Thursday over the Pioneers.

Caleb Billings scored twice for Grayson County (7-3, 3-2) while Mario Ruiz and Micah Cowley had one goal apiece.

Fort Chiswell, which dropped to 4-7, 1-4, got its goal from Joe Stoneman.

 

BASEBALL

Fort Chiswell 5, Grayson County 4: In Independence, the Pioneers took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning Friday, then held off the Blue Devils to keep their MED chances afloat.

Grayson County (8-5, 4-1) led 2-0 after the first inning as Matthew Cornett doubled to drive in Spencer Roberts, then scored on Landon Frost’s base hit.

Fort Chiswell trailed 3-2 before its big third inning, but the Pioneers had to sweat through a couple of Grayson threats. In the bottom of the seventh, Roberts doubled with two out and Max Rodgers followed with a run-scoring double before Pioneer pitcher Levi Mooney got the final out.

Brett Mabry was 3-for-4 while Ratliff and Coleman Thomas had two hits each for the Pioneers, who outhit Grayson 11-5.

Carroll County 10, Marion 0: Josh Underwood’s complete-game three-hitter lifted the Cavaliers to the Southwest District win Friday at Bill Worrell Field.

Underwood struck out two and walked a pair in the game shortened to six innings on the 10-run rule.

Offensively, Carroll County (7-6, 2-2) was led by Kenley Meredith’s four RBIs. Reece Edwards’s three hits and Seth Burris added a pair of hits for the Cavaliers.
