A senior project at Galax High School proved to be a big success on April 14, as Allison White organized and carried out the Jimmy Cockerham Scholarship Fund Volleyball Tournament. Twelve teams entered the tournament and more than 100 people attended. The winning team consisted of Tim Burton, Ashley Surber, Cindy Rudy, Steve Burcham, Robin Pack and Dennis Vass.
A special uncle of White’s and an avid supporter of Galax High School sports, Jimmy Cockerham passed away Oct. 8, 2011. He was a huge encourager of all White’s athletics and would usually call after an event, if he was not attending, to find out how it went. White felt led to do something special to honor his memory.
Galax High seniors are encouraged, though not required, to do a project. With the help of the senior sponsor, Jean Campbell-Kuhn, White began work on organizing the tournament. Many teams who participated said they really enjoyed it and would love to see it done again.
“It was great to see everyone come together and have fun for such a good cause,” said White. “I certainly appreciated everyone’s support, especially those who volunteered to work the tournament. I could not have done it without them.”
A total of $2,100 was raised from this project, a portion of which will be presented to a Galax High School senior in May. The remaining balance will be given to the Galax Foundation for Excellence in Education, awaiting enough money to be endowed so that a scholarship can be given each year to a Galax senior in Cockerham’s memory.
