Even though the school year is almost over and some graduating seniors will move on to concentrate on the real world, Galax High School drama students are gearing up for one last exciting performance.

The GHS theatre department, along with Galax Parks & Recreation, will present the concert version of “Grease” this weekend at the Rex Theater.

“What better way to end the year than with a fun show,” said B.J. Carroll, GHS drama teacher. “Fun is the byline for this show.”

Carroll is also the show’s vocal director.

Performed once before in 1991, Carroll said “Grease” is the first major musical for GHS in a while.

This final performance for some seniors — and the last until next school year for others — is one of the ways Carroll and the drama department are commemorating their five years of bonding and accomplishments.

GHS students have worked on the play for nearly six weeks.

A few of these graduating students have been in Carroll’s drama class since their eighth grade year, performing in such well-known shows such as “Footloose,” “Wizard of Oz” and “Oklahoma.”

“This just gives me the chance to do a wonderful thing with this group of seniors,” said Carroll.

Due to the renovation of GHS, Carroll said the drama department lacked space for creating large sets. But, the play will include all the lines, recognizable songs and twice the fun and energy of the full show.

“Grease” is a two-hour performance with intermission, and this time, the audience will become a part of the show through sing-alongs with favorites like “Greased Lightning,” “We Go Together” and “Hand Jive.”

And, the audience can participate in the famous “Hand Jive” choreography.

The show is directed by GHS alumnus Sarah Miles, now a drama major at James Madison University.

In addition to directing “Grease,” Miles has recently taken up the opportunity to assist a JMU professor in the production of “The Rover.”

The cast includes, in order of appearance: Miss Lynch (Tayler Engelhardt); Patty Simcox (Brittany Dixon); Eugene Florczyk (G. Zachary); Jan (Marie Orton); Marty (Drew Cardwell); Betty Rizzo (Bailey Savage); Doody (Matt Hanks); Roger (Ben Chaffee); Kenickie (Anthony Thompson); Sonny La Tierri (Drew Bobbit); Frenchy (Arianna Sexton); Sandy Dumbrowski (Carleigh Griffeth); Danny Zuko (Josh Sexton); Vince Fontaine (Drew Burnett); Johnny Casino (Cameron Higgins); Cha-Cha Di Gregorio (Hannah Dixon); Teen Angel (Phil Parlock); Sheila (Catie Goodson); Hero (Tyler Houk); Scientist (Scott Alouf).

Music for the show is provided by accompanist Tommy Whittle. Rehearsal accompanist was Jing Yang Yi, an exchange student from China.
