Galax City Public Schools will begin a $356,200 construction project on Tuesday, making upgrades to the high school football field.
As part of the school system’s 5-year capital project plan, the Galax School Board approved a bid of $296,200 from DCI/Shires Inc. and a $60,000 bid from DCI/Shires of Bluefield, W. Va., for upgrades to the athletic field and track at GHS.
The project will include replacing the cracked, asphalt track with a latex surface; enhancing lighting by adding rows of bulbs to the existing lights; adding play clocks to each end zone; and installing an improved sprinkler system.
Substantial completion is to be reached on July 22. The construction will not interfere with any sports practices during this time.
Constructed in 1987, the track has deteriorated over the years, said Galax Superintendent Bill Sturgill.
“The commitment is to not push capital projects aside, but to provide a top-quality education, which includes upgrading our facility,” said Sturgill, of why the schools are moving forward with such a large investment. “The track and football field serves the whole community, including walkers, military members that use it for training and our student athletes.”
DCI/Shires Inc. placed the lowest of three bids. One company placed a bid of $475,600, and another bid $554,400.
