School wins national contest

By Staff Reports

Galax Elementary School has officially won this year’s UCT Gives Back contest. The school’s Cooperative Care Center for Exceptional Children will receive a $10,000 prize, which will be used to buy materials for the students.
“It has been a whole community event... one of the most uniting things I’ve seen in Galax in a long time,” said GES Assistant Principal Sonia Truitt, noting that an outpouring of support came in from the Galax, Carroll County and Grayson County communities.
Local individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations flooded Facebook with links to the CCEC video that followed teacher Linda Hunter’s class through their weekly routine. Every aspect of the video was original, including the background music composed by GES music teacher Dawn Kinman.
GES remained near the top throughout the majority of the voting, and remained in either first or second place in the final weeks.
Truitt said plans were being made for a school celebration later this week. There will be a formal presentation of the prize in March.
