Galax wins MED; Cavs second in Southwest

Galax laid claim to eight individual championships and repeated as Mountain Empire District champs in the MED tournament last week at Galax High School.

The Maroon Tide racked up 192 team points, 40 points better than runner-up Grayson County. Fort Chiswell was third with 99 points.

Eric Stowell (103 pounds), Ethan Campbell (112), Edu Rojas (119), Jose Rojas (130), Jose Martinez (140), Seth Criner (160), Jay Miles (189) and Dakota Cockerham (215) all won their respective weight classes for the Maroon Tide.

Individual champions for Grayson County included Cody McGuire (125), Richard Pugh (135), Michael Chase (152) and Stephen Ross (171).

Runner-up finishes were earned by Dante Ravennell (125), Juan Hernandez (145), Darrian Sizemore (152) and Brandon Phipps (285) of Galax and Grayson County’s Jessica Lowe (103), Ben Horton (119), Jamie Oliver (130), Nathan McFarland (140) and Cody Shin (160).

All wrestlers advance to the Region C tournament this Friday and Saturday at Northwood.


Carroll County finished second in the Southwest District wrestling tournament as Grundy won the event for the 25th consecutive year.

The Golden Wave took seven of the 14 individual weight classes and finished with 233.5 points while Carroll County claimed two individual titles to tally 178.5 points. Abingdon placed third with 157 points, followed by Richlands (145.5), Graham (120), Marion (112) and Tazewell (92.5).

Drew McCraw improved to 41-3 on the year and repeated as district champion in the 285-pound weight class while sophomore Blake Bowman won his first SWD title in the 130-pound class.

The top six individuals in each weight class advance to the Region IV tournament this weekend.
