ROUND-UP

By Staff Reports

Galax went 1-1 in a pair of nondistrict girls’ soccer matches against Southwest District competition, edging Marion 3-2 Monday and taking a 6-0 loss from Richlands on Tuesday, both at Galax High School.

Cassie Richardson scored three goals in Richlands’ win, two of them on assists by Makenley Davis, as the Blue Tornadoes outshot the Maroon Tide 26-1.

Nadia Ashiq scored two goals nine minutes apart as Richlands took a 3-0 lead into the half.

Thanks to 13 saves by Trinece Bryson, Galax kept it a three-goal game until the final 20 minutes, when Richlands closed with a flurry, starting with a Davis goal on a deflected direct kick with 18 minutes left. Davis set up Richardson five minutes later and her corner kick was booted in by Richardson with five minutes to play.

Monday, the Tide gave up two quick goals and fell behind Marion 2-1 in the first nine minutes before battling back for the win. Taya Scott and Ashley Jordan had the Maroon Tide’s first two goals, and Alex Moreno scored in the 33rd minute to put Galax in front to stay. Galax allowed just three shots on goal the rest of the way, all of them stopped by Bryson.

Carroll County 2, George Wythe 1: Kelsea Utt curled a corner kick into the net with less than five minutes to play as the Cavaliers edged the Maroons in a nondistrict match Tuesday.

Lindsey Brumfield scored from just inside the 18 to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead in the second half, but Wythe tied the match when Carroll transfer Katie Frazier scored with nine minutes remaining.

BASEBALL

Grayson County 10, Bland County 0: The Blue Devils broke open a 3-0 game with seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings and opened Mountain Empire District play with a five-inning win Wednesday in Independence.

Max Rodgers allowed three hits and struck out six in three innings on the mound to earn the win.

Five Blue Devils had at least two hits each, all of them singles except for two Luke Wilson doubles. Landon Frost went 3-for-4 and Dylan Isom 2-for-3, both with two RBIs. Rodgers and Lucas Rudy also had two hits each.

Galax 4, Marion 3: The Maroon Tide opened with three runs in the bottom of the first and held off the Scarlet Hurricane in a nondistrict game Monday night at Felts Park.

Alex Zipprich and Caleb Spurlin each had RBI base hits in the first inning for Galax. Marion tied the game at 3-3 with two unearned runs in the top of the fifth, but Stew Merdian tripled to drive in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning.

Merdian, who had two hits, also got the pitching win by working the final three innings. Galax committed five errors but Maroon Tide batters took advantage of six walks by Marion pitching.

Christiansburg 5, Carroll County 1: The Blue Demons scored four runs in the second inning and topped the Cavaliers for the second day in a row, winning the nondistrict game Tuesday in Christiansburg.

The Blue Demons (7-1) led 1-0 when Justin Bowler capped the four-run second with a two-run home run to left.

Carroll County (4-3) got on the board in the top of the third with a two-out RBI double by Josh Underwood. The Cavaliers would get no closer, though, stranding two baserunners in the fourth and leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.

Ryan Gravley had two of Carroll’s five hits. Bowler had two hits and three RBIs for C’burg.

SOFTBALL

Carroll County 4, Tazewell 2: The Cavaliers opened SWD play with a tight win Tuesday in Tazewell.

Eustacia Smith scored on a double steal and Autumn Hill singled to drive in Grace Lindsey as Carroll took a 2-0 lead in the third.

Smith’s squeeze bunt scored Tiffany Moore in the fourth and Moore scored on an error in the sixth.

Eden Durnil held Tazewell to five hits through 52/3 innings, striking out six. Gracie Davidson earned the save. Moore and Ragan Halsey each had two hits for Carroll County.

Pulaski County 16, Galax 5: The Cougars took command with a seven-run outburst in the top of the second and cruised to the nondistrict win Tuesday at Mountain View Park.

Galax (1-6) tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by Brittany Byrd and Morgan Neff, but Pulaski (3-3-1) broke the game open in the second thanks to four Tide errors.

Brooklyn Key added a two-run triple for Galax in the sixth.

Tide pitchers Haley Reynolds and Holly Cassell combined for 12 strikeouts, but Galax was done in by eight errors. Byrd had three hits and Key had two hits and two RBIs for the Maroon Tide.

Sarah Wright homered and had three hits for Pulaski.
