Tide's Ethan Campbell wins 112-pound championship


Galax had six wrestlers post top-four finishes Saturday and took second place in the team standings at it own Maroon Tide Invitational wrestling tournament. Wrestling without starters in five weight classes, the Maroon Tide still managed to place three in the championship round. Ethan Campbell pinned Robbie Kell of Patrick Henry-Glade Spring in the finals of the 112-pound class for Galax’s lone individual title, and Dante Ravenell placed second at 145 after suffering a technical fall to  Charlotte (N.C.) Butler’s Tom Puckett. In the 145-pound final, Jose Martinez of Galax was edged 3-2 by Christiansburg’s Garrett Dowdy. Darian Sizemore placed third at 140 after William Pinkerton of Watauga (N.C.) reached his five-match limit, but the daily limit got the Tide’s Zack Testerman, who settled for fourth at 171. Junior Espinoza lost by pin in the 103-pound finals to Christiansburg’s Kush Shah. Grayson County’s Michael Chase pinned Magna Vista’s Xavier Myers for third place at 152. Alleghany (N.C.) won the team title with 174.5 points, winning three individual titles among its eight top-four finishes. Galax (133) was second, followed by Butler (130.5), Christiansburg B (120.5), Watauga (107), Pulaski County (106), Castlewood (103.5), Magna Vista (102), Franklin County (99), Grayson County (59), Patrick Henry (40), Fort Chiswell (32) and Lebanon (27).
