Galax scored 28 points in the second quarter and rolled over Carroll County 44-3 in the two teams' annual benefit game Saturday night in Galax.
The Maroon Tide, which opens regular season play Friday at Glenvar, led 13-3 when it scored four touchdowns in the final 8:09 of the first half. Charles Harris got the ball rolling with a 38-yard scoring run and Jonathen Reyna booted one of his five PATs fora 20-3 Galax lead.
Following a Carroll County punt and a Maroon Tide penalty to the Tide 3-yard line, Galax quarterback Keyshawn Brown dropped a short pass off to Steven Peoples, who outran the Carroll County defense for a 97-yard scoring play.
Consecutive three-and-outs by the Galax defense allowed the Tide to tack on two more scores in the final two minutes of the half. Joseph Dixon ran through several tackles on his way to a 61-yard score at the 1:46 mark, and he hauled in a 37-yard Brown pass for a touchdown with 24 seconds left inthe half for a 41-3 Galax lead.
Reyna kicked a 31-yard field goal at 1:51 of the third quarter for the only scoring of the second half.
Galax scored on each of its first two possessions to take a quick 13-0 lead. Holding Carroll to a three-and out to open the game, a 29-yard Peoples punt return had Galax in excellent field position at the Cavalier 14-yard line. The Maroon Tide put the ball in the end zone three times, all of which were nullified by penalty, before finally, on third-and-31 from the 34-yard line, Brown dumped off a short toss in the flats to Peoples, who shed two Carroll tacklers on his way to a touchdown at 8:56 of the first period.
A Darian Brown interception and his long return gave Galax possession at the Carroll 20, and Peoples bolted up the middle and into the end zone two plays later from 22 yards out.
Carroll County got on the board late in the first quarter when a bad snap in punt formation rolled to the Maroon Tide 6. The Galax defense held, and the Cavaliers settled for a 21-yard Chase Goins field goal.
Galax racked up 415 yards of offense, including 233 on the ground. Peoples carried 12 times for 99 yards, Harris ran nine times for 69 yards and Dixon added 65 yards on four rushes.
Keyshawn Brown completed 4-of-8 passes for 182 yards, including 131 yards to Peoples on two receptions.
Carroll County, which opens Friday at Floyd County, was limited to 102 yards of offense.
