Two men have been arrested and charged with drug possession in Galax by members of the Galax Police Department and Twin County Drug Task Force.

The two arrested were Jorge Luis Quintero, 25, of Sparta, N.C., and Arturo Valejas Hernandez, 33, of Galax.

Police Officer Jody Poole arrested the two after a traffic stop revealed a quantity of suspected methamphetamine. Poole observed what he suspected as drug activity in his patrol zone on Monday.

The officer developed reasonable suspicion to stop a Ford Expedition operated by Hernandez, who did not have an operator’s license or identification, police said.

Galax Police Sgt. Jim Spence was summoned to the scene along with “Dunja,” a police canine trained to detect narcotics.

The canine helped to discover about an ounce of methamphetamine in the vehicle.

A subsequent investigation led officers to another location in Galax where “Dunja” helped discover about a pound of suspected methamphetamine in a second vehicle.

The methamphetamine has an approximate street value in excess of $45,000.

Both men were taken to the New River Valley Jail where they are being held without bond pending  arraignment in Galax General District Court.
