A 21-year-old Galax woman has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of her brother.

According to the Galax Police Department, Danielle Nicole Ilene Jones, of Neptune Drive in Galax, was arrested after authorities found the body of her brother, Mathew Jackson Jones, 18, of Center Street in Galax, early Monday morning.

A press release issued by the department states that officers responded to a home at 202 Kenbrook Drive shortly before 2 a.m. Monday. Responding officers found the body of Mathew Jones, who appeared to have been shot.

The offense was reported by Christa Lathem, a resident of the home.

Galax Police Chief Rick Clark would not elaborate on the relationship between the residents of the home and Mathew and Danielle Jones, nor the motive or intent for the incident, saying that it is still an active investigation.

Authorities recovered a weapon near the scene of the crime.

Danielle Jones fled the scene on foot, police said, and during a search, Police Officer Kevin Hall located her on West Stuart Drive — across town from the scene of her brother's killing — near the Heart and Vascular Center. Hall took her into custody at 2:35 a.m., according to Clark.

Mathew Jones was pronounced dead at the scene, and the body was transported to the state forensics lab in Roanoke for an autopsy.

Detective J.B. Greer charged Danielle Jones with second-degree murder and she was taken to the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin, where she is being held pending her arraignment in the Galax Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.
