BRISTOL –– Galax won its fourth state golf championship and its second in the last five years, grinding through a tough course and a tough field Tuesday to win the team title by 12 strokes over Giles at Clear Creek Golf Club.
The Maroon Tide adds the team championship to the Group AA crown it won in 1974 and the Group A titles claimed in 1988 and 2004.
Scott Alouf had the second-lowest score among the team competitors on the second day of the two-day event, coming in with a 6-over-par 77. Kyle Schaeffer lopped 14 strokes off of his first day's score to finish the second day with an 80, Brock Cox turned in an 81 and Rob Guynn carded an 86 as the Maroon Tide finished Tuesday's round with a 324 for a two-day score of 646. Giles, which bested Galax for the Region C championship last week, finished second in the team standings with a 658 and Chatham finished third at 660.
Galax finished the first day of the two-day event with a nine-stroke lead over both Chatham and Appomattox County, shooting a 322 behind Guynn's 79. Cox had an 80, Alouf an 81 and Eddie Hanks shot an 82.
