Galax halts skid, holds off Bland County 50-46

 BLAND –– Galax rallied from a two-point halftime deficit and ended a three-game slide, holding off Bland County 50-46 in a Mountain Empire District girls’ game Monday night.

The Maroon Tide (6-7 overall, 2-3 district) and the Bears (2-14, 0-6) took turns pounding one another for a quarter at a time. Galax opened up with a 13-4 lead after eight minutes, but Bland County owned the second quarter and took a 24-22 lead into the break.

The Maroon Tide bounced back in front 36-29 with a 14-5 advantage in the third quarter before holding on for the win down the stretch.

Susan Davis led Galax with 13 points and Lindsey Ayers contributed 10 for the Tide.

Bland County was led by Amber Eaton with 18 points and eight rebounds. Malea Lambert knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for the Bears.

Grayson County 54, Marion 43: The Blue Devils stepped out of the MED and picked up a good win against a Conference 39 opponent, pulling away from the Scarlet Hurricane in a nondistrict game Monday in Independence.

Grayson County (10-6) rallied from a four-point second-quarter deficit and led 32-30 going into the fourth quarter before pulling away over the final eight minutes.

Camryn McGrady paced the Blue Devils with 22 points, six rebounds and six blocks while Meredith Frost added 13 points for Grayson.

Margaret Wagner was Marion’s lone double-figure scorer, leading the way with 16 points.
