Galax goes yard to win opener

 Galax used a grand slam and a three-run homer to overcome a six-run deficit and the Maroon Tide opened its 2012 season with a 12-8 win over Pulaski County in a nondistrict game Tuesday at Felts Park.


The Cougars (3-1) took a 6-0 lead after the second inning before the Maroon Tide used the long ball to start its comeback. Eddie Hanks clubbed a three-run homer in the fourth and Chandler Quesenberry clubbed a grand slam to left in the fifth to knot the score at 8-8.

Jonathan Alouf’s RBI single put Galax in front for good, and the Maroon Tide got RBI singles from Chandler Quesenberry and Trevor Quesenberry later in the inning for some breathing room.

Hanks and Alouf were both 3-for-4 while Travis Garvey and Chandler Quesenberry added two hits each. Chandler Quesenberry had five RBIs in his first varsity game.

Trevor Quesenberry pitched the fourth through the sixth innings to earn the win. Jake Tabor and Cody Long each had a two-run home run for Pulaski County.

Carroll County 9, Patrick County 1: The Cavaliers avenged a 12-3 loss to the Cougars two weeks ago, using a six-run third inning to fuel the nondistrict win Tuesday at Bill Worrell Field.

After allowing a run in the first inning, Reese Edwards shut down the Cougars into the fourth. Garrett Nelson and Brandon Lineberry finished off Patrick.

Aaron Hooven’s two-run double in the bottom of the first put the Cavaliers in front to stay and Isaac Sumner added an RBI single for a 3-1 lead. Edwards, Lucas Holder and Hooven added RBI base hits in the six-run third inning to cap the Cavalier scoring.

Edwards and Hooven had two hits apiece, Hooven driving in three.

Radford 8, Grayson County 3: The Bobcats used a four-run third to jump out in front and hand the Blue Devils a nondistrict loss Tuesday in Radford. Joey Sutphin had three hits and Drew Cox added two hits and two RBIs for Radford (3-3). Grayson County fell to 0-5.



Galax 8, Radford 2: The Maroon Tide picked up its first win of the season behind Haley Reynolds’ five-hitter in a nondistrict game Tuesday in Radford.

Reynolds allowed single runs in the first and sixth and Galax led just 3-2 before unloading for five runs in the top of the seventh. Brooklyn Key had a two-run single while Britney Byrd and Taylor Cummings added RBI singles in the big seventh.

Byrd was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Galax (1-3). Nikki Brewer and Heaven Thomas each had a pair of hits for Radford (3-2).

Grayson County 10, Auburn 5: The Blue Devils got a 3-for-4 day from Jaime Adams in the nondistrict win Tuesday in Riner.



Auburn 3, Grayson County 2: Volodymir Phillips and Josh Underwood scored two minutes apart in the second half to propel the Eagles to a nondistrict win over the Blue Devils.

Underwood’s game-winner came on a penalty kick in the 56th minute.

Caleb Billings and Adam Wyatt each scored for Grayson County.
