Store under construction on South Main Street

Galax is set to get a second Dollar General Store, and grading work for the site has already begun on South Main Street.
Recently, a former restaurant building and a car wash were torn down on South Main, making way for the new store.
Dollar General’s public relations manager, Crystal Ghassemi, says that the new store will open in the spring.
Galax City Manager Keith Barker confirmed the plans for Dollar General, but noted that construction is still in its early stages.
“We just received the plans a few days ago, and we are reviewing them now,” he said.
The new store is owned by JMB Investments, a company based in Knoxville, Tenn., Barker said.
According to Ghassemi, store placement is determined by how convenient the location will be for its customers. “We want to make sure that our stores serve the area,” she said. “Stores generally service customers within a three to five mile radius, or 10 minute drive.”
The store will cover approximately 7,200 square feet, said Ghassimi. An official opening day has not been determined.
The new store will offer employment for six to 10 people, depending on the need. Applications will be available through Dollar General’s website when the completion date nears, Ghassemi said.
The city already has a Dollar General in the Food City Plaza shopping center, and it is expected to remain open, Barker said.
