Galax earns share of MED title; Grayson remains in the hunt

 BLAND –– Galax took care of business early and clinched a share of the Mountain Empire District boys’ basketball championship, wiping out Bland County 66-32 Tuesday night.

Galax (17-2, 7-1) outscored the Bears 18-1 in the first eight minutes and led 35-7 at halftime as Jerad Brown scored 11 first-half points.

Brown finished with 14 points to lead Galax, which is in the clubhouse with the district lead.  Devonte McKinney added 10 points for the Tide.

Bland County (7-14, 2-6), which finishes in fourth place in the standings, was led by Chase Hankins with 18 points.

Grayson County 99, Narrows 50: Adam Cornett set a new school record with nine 3-pointers and the Blue Devils remained in the running for the MED title with the easy win Tuesday in Independence.

Grayson County (16-4, 6-1) traveled to Fort Chiswell last night (Thursday) with a share of the MED championship at stake. As of Wednesday night, no date or time had been set for a possible playoff game with Galax.

Cornett connected on five 3-pointers in the first period alone as Grayson County poured in an incredible 37 points in the first eight minutes to lead by 31. The senior guard finished with a career-best 38 points.

Four other Blue Devils reached double figures in the scoring column, led by Eric Harvey’s 16. Mikey Rodgers scored 11 while Tyler Rutherford and Ty Cannaday added 10 points each.

Chandler Burton and Brock Lusk led the Green Wave (8-13, 0-8) with 18 and 17 points, respectively.

Carroll County 78, Floyd County 71: The Cavaliers built a seven-point advantage in the first eight minutes and made the lead stand up, taking a nondistrict win Wednesday in Floyd.

Ryan Gravley poured in 25 points to lead four Cavaliers in double figures. Austin Horton scored 11 while Mac Martin and Kody Alley added 10 points each.

Justin Harris (20 points) and Jarrod Lusk (18 points, 10 rebounds) led the Buffaloes.

Carroll County 77, Graham 72: The Cavaliers wrapped up second place in the Southwest District with the win Tuesday night in Bluefield.

Carroll County rallied into the lead by outscoring the G-Men 25-15 in the second quarter for a 40-33 halftime lead.

Ryan Gravley led three Cavaliers in double figures with 22 points. Wes Smoot added 12 points and Connor Lundy 11 for Carroll (12-7, 8-3).

Euneke Diaz led all scorers with 26 points for Graham (6-13, 5-5).
