Galax drops twin bill to Graham

BLUEFIELD –– Graham took advantage of a cold shooting night by Galax and knocked the Maroon Tide girls out of a three-way tie for the Mountain Empire District lead with a 42-29 win Thursday night at Graham Middle School.

The G-Girls (9-8 overall, 3-2 district) never trailed as Galax (10-7, 4-2) hit just a quarter of their field goal attempts.

The Maroon Tide trailed 23-14 at halftime but Sydney Lindsey scored Galax’s first 10 points of the second half to pull the Tide to within 28-24.

Graham took a 32-24 lead into the fourth quarter and pulled away, outscoring Galax 10-5 in the final eight minutes.

Lindsey led the Maroon Tide with 17 points while Emaleigh Gallinger scored 15 to pace Graham.

Graham 37, Galax 33: The Maroon Tide did a number on the G-Men defensively but couldn’t get enough shots to fall to unseat the MED co-leaders, falling 37-33 Thursday night at Graham Middle School.

Graham improved to 13-4 overall, 5-0 in district play, a half-game ahead of Grayson County in the league standings after Grayson’s game Friday was postponed until Saturday. The G-Men and Blue Devils are scheduled to meet tonight.

The low-scoring affair saw Graham take a 16-10 lead at halftime, and the G-Men led by as many as 10 points, 34-24 with a little more than a minute to play. Galax made a late charge with two Keyshawn Brown 3-pointers and another by Caleb Bartlett before running out of time.

Brown led the Maroon Tide with eight points and Chase Garvey scored seven. Graham’s Spencer Sheets had 14 points and Colby Hill added 12.
