Galax boys hammer Pioneers, Wave

Galax’s boys’ soccer team upped its overall record to 10-0-1 and did so in a big way, scoring 18 goals in a pair of Mountain Empire District matches last week.

Galax 9, Fort Chiswell 1: The Maroon Tide began its two-game scoring spree Wednesday with an easy win in Max Meadows.

Seven different players had at least one goal each for Galax, including a hat trick by Mario Carranza.

Sebastian Gomez, Emeterio Arce, Isaac Tracy, Edgar Guzman, Denver Nuckolls and Andres Moreno also scored for Galax.

Dominic DiGiacomo set up two goals for Galax, which also got an assist each from Guzman, Jovani Esquivel and Jonathan Reyna.

Maroon Tide keepers Misa Solis and Ricardo Ortiz made three saves apiece.

Galax 9, Narrows 0: One day later, Galax put another ‘9’ on the board, blanking the Green Wave in an MED game in Galax.

Guzman, Arce and Carranza tallied two goals and two assists apiece with Carranza striking twice with headers, including once off of a corner kick. Guzman had two goals and an assist while DiGiacomo, Gomez and Joshel Urbina each scored once.

Galax peppered the Green Wave defense with 30 shots on goal and clamped down in its own defensive zone, not allowing a Narrows shot.

Marion 5, Grayson County 1: The Hurricanes built a 3-1 halftime lead and pulled away for the win Wednesday in Marion.

Forest Link scored the Blue Devils’ lone goal. Brian Leaman had a pair of goals for Marion.

Graham 3, Grayson County 0: Blue Devil keeper James Williams had an astonishing 36 saves but quantity won out as the G-Men took the MED win Thursday at the East River Soccer Complex.

Jonathan Figueroa was able to get a shot past Williams in the 25th minute for a 1-0 Graham lead at the half.

Williams kept it a 1-0 match until Graham managed a pair of goals midway through the second half.



Hidden Valley 7, Carroll County 4: A tight ballgame got away from the Cavaliers when the Titans pushed four runs across in the top of the fifth, paving the way to a River Ridge District win Thursday at Bill Worrell Field.

Reece Edwards spotted Carroll County an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the first, and Cavalier starter Seth Burris held Hidden Valley scoreless until a two-run double by Sean O’Connor in the top of the fourth.

The Titans got two doubles to go with a walk and a hit batter to string together their game-turning rally in the fifth.

Edwards doubled home a run and scored on Kenley Meredith’s single as Carroll cut the gap to 6-3 in the home half of the fifth but the Cavaliers would get no closer the rest of the way.

Matt Utermark went 3-for-3 with three RBIs for Hidden Valley.

Edwards had two doubles and the home run in four at-bats while Trace Davis and Daniel Bowman added two hits each for Carroll County, which outhit the Titans 10-7.



Galax 9, Bland County 0: The Maroon Tide gave up only four games in nine individual matches and breezed to the MED win Thursday at Felts Park.

In singles, Lindsey Ayers, Carleigh Pack and Jessica Garman each won their match by 8-0 scores, as did the doubles teams of Paige Hanks-Susan Davis and Ayers-Pack. Kayleigh Funk and Ashlyn Haga took a forfeit win at No. 3 doubles.

Hanks took an 8-2 win at No. 1 singles while Funk and Davis both won by 8-1 counts.
