Galax boys clinch MED; Lady Cavs lose on buzzer-beater

NARROWS –– Galax locked up the Mountain Empire District boys’ basketball championship, jumping to a big first-quarter lead and holding on for a 66-52 win Saturday over Narrows.

The Maroon Tide improved to 19-2 overall, 5-1 in the district and earned an automatic spot in the Region C Division 1 playoffs as well as the top seed in the MED tournament.

Scott Alouf hit six 3-pointers and led all scorers with 24 points for Galax. Tyler Houk and Justin Hash tossed in 15 points apiece.

Adam Morris led Narrows (4-15, 2-5) with 14 points.

The Scarlet Hurricane dominated the first and fourth quarters in taking a big Southwest District win Saturday in Marion.

The Cavaliers (3-17, 2-9) fell behind 15-5 after one quarter, and Marion hit four 3-pointers and outscored Carroll 26-14 in the fourth. Gavin Roe scored 15 points and Joey Dotson added 11 for Marion (10-8, 6-3). Caleb Taylor’s nine points were high for Carroll.

The Cavaliers appeared headed to overtime but Casey Bradshaw banked in a half-court shot at the buzzer to lift the Cougars to the nondistrict win Monday in Stuart.

The miracle shot gave Bradshaw 20 points for the night. Kylene Culler added 14 points for Patrick County (14-6).

Rachel Dalton led Carroll County (13-6) with 11 points.

Alicia Weatherly’s free throw with four seconds left broke a 41-41 tie, and she then stole the inbounds pass to seal the win in an MED game Saturday in Narrows.

Jamie Webb led all scorers with 20 points for the Maroon Tide (8-12, 2-5). Katasha Davis scored 12 points and Morgan Buckland had 11 for Narrows (14-7, 3-4).
