Galax boys blow away Maroons

 Galax dominated the early part of each half and rolled to a 62-38 win over George Wythe in a boys’ basketball game Tuesday in Galax.

Holding the Maroons (2-2) to four first-quarter points, Galax (3-1) built a 15-point lead after eight minutes and never was threatened.

The Maroon Tide opened the second half in similar fashion, outscoring George Wythe 18-6 in the third quarter to take a 46-21 lead into the fourth period.

Cliff Conley led all scorers with 20 points for Galax, which got 12 points from Darian Brown.

Grant Anders was George Wythe’s lone double-figure scorer with 10 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Carroll County 90, Christiansburg 27: The Cavaliers overwhelmed the Blue Demons in the first quarter and breezed to the 63-point win Tuesday in Christiansburg.

It was the River Ridge District opener for both schools.

Carroll County (4-1, 1-0) piled up 33 points in the first quarter to take a 26-point lead.

Keely Lundy hit three 3-pointers and led five Cavaliers in double figures with 21 points. Mattie Kennedy scored 14 and Haley Turman tossed in a dozen points. Sara Bobbitt and Rylee Haynes scored 11 points each, Bobbitt’s coming on the strength of three 3-pointers.

Galax 50, George Wythe 46: The Maroon Tide built an eight-point lead in the first quarter and held off the Maroons down the stretch to take a nondistrict win Tuesday in Galax.

Madison Shupe led a balanced Galax scoring attack with 12 points while Paige Hanks, Sydney Lindsey and Haley Larrowe scored eight points apiece.

George Wythe (3-2) got 17 points from both Grayson Anders and Elizabeth Jones.

Galax improved to 2-1 with the win.

Marion 55, Grayson County 52: The Blue Devils crafted a 12-point halftime lead and took a 40-31 lead into the fourth quarter before the Scarlet Hurricanes rallied for the nondistrict win in Marion.

Margaret Wagner went 5-for-6 from the foul line and knocked down a pair of big 3-pointers to lead the Marion comeback. She finished with 28 points to lead all scorers.

Meredith Frost paced Grayson County (2-3) with 22 points.
