Outsized at nearly every position, the Cavaliers (1-6) planned on making the Maroon Tide (6-1) win it from long range. Scott Alouf and Cameron Frazier obliged, combining for eight of Galax’s treys, including five from Alouf.

“I wanted to make them beat us from the outside, and they did tonight,” said Carroll County coach Brad Hawks. “I was proud of my kids, though. That was a lot better than a 23-point game. We were within 10 points with a minute left, so I was proud of them for that.”

The 23-point margin was the difference between the two when Galax took the season opener 72-49 on Dec. 3, giving Hawks and the Cavs a good idea of what they would be faced with on Friday.

“Their pressure hurt us just like every other time, and they get hot shooting threes,” Hawks said. “Our pack defense, that’s the shot that beats you. They beat us last time shooting threes, and it’s tough to guard when you’ve got two or three kids who can hit like that.”

Galax’s first 3-pointer fell not five seconds into the game as Cameron Frazier connected from the left wing off the opening tip, giving Galax the lead for good. Though Galax wouldn’t score again for another five minutes, Carroll County went scoreless the first 4:03.

A typical Galax run, sparked by pressure defense, separated the two late in the first quarter. Alouf had just knocked down a trey off an inbounds play when a transition bucket by Deion George was followed by an Alouf steal, setting up Bryan Martin’s jumper from inside the top of the key as Galax led 14-7 after one.

Patrick Anderson scored off a Frazier steal, and Frazier drained a 3-pointer off an Anderson steal seconds later as the lead grew to 19-7 early in the second. The Maroon Tide closed the first half on an 8-0 run sparked by two Alouf bombs, taking a 29-15 halftime lead.

Galax forced Carroll County into 19 first-half turnovers and thus attempted more than twice as many shots from the floor, 35-16.

Justin Hash scored seven third-period points as the lead grew to 20 points, 42-22, with 1:21 left in the third.

“We started off sluggish,” said Galax coach Verl Brown. “We missed too many shots early in the game. We got steals, but we didn’t turn our steals into points. One thing that concerns me about being out of school is being focused. We got onto them a little bit at halftime and just told them that we can play better than that, and we came out and executed better in the second half.”

But Carroll County rallied and had a couple of possessions with which to get inside of 10 points. Layups by the Cavaliers’ Tyler Reavis and Ryan Frazier ended the third, and James Lanning hit a trey to open the fourth. Lanning and Reavis scored on driving layups in what would become an 11-3 run, pulling Carroll to 45-33 with 6:36 to go. The Cavs went scoreless their next two trips down the floor, though, and Cameron Frazier hit a 20-footer to end the Cavalier threat.

“We didn’t take them lightly, but we weren’t as focused as when we went over there, and neither of us had played yet,” Brown said. “But when we took our time and got set up, we did hit our threes.”

Alouf led the Maroon Tide with 19 points, 12 rebounds and five steals, and Frazier added 13 points.

Lanning paced Carroll County with his 17 points. Reavis finished with 14 points and Isaiah Thompson collected 12 rebounds.

“Of course I want to win, but it’s like going up a ladder,” Hawks said. “I’m seeing improvement every game. I’m not giving up, and the guys aren’t giving up.”
