Galax battles past Grayson

White put away 21 kills and Brewer stonewalled her way to 18 blocks Tuesday night as Galax took an important Mountain Empire District volleyball win, knocking off Grayson County 25-14, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15.

Despite the double-digit loss in the first set, Grayson County bounced back to tie the match in the second by pulling away from a 16-16 deadlock. The Blue Devils were on their way to taking a one-set advantage, building a 15-8 lead in the third set before Galax rallied with a 12-4 spurt.

The Maroon Tide pulled out from a 9-9 tie in the fourth set to seal the match.

“We started off hesitant in the fourth game, and Grayson County doesn’t make a lot of errors,” Galax coach Rose Houk said. “We finally got our fire back and pulled away.”

White added 12 blocks to her big hitting night and Brewer also put away a dozen kills for Galax (18-1, 7-0 district). Bailey Shumate contributed 10 kills, 15 assists and nine digs and Grace Wilson put up 18 assists.

Morgan Neff had 18 digs and 13 points, Carolyn Vaughan provided 10 digs and Paige Hanks served for 11 points.

Natasha Moore had nine kills and five blocks to lead Grayson County (10-3, 5-3), Brandi Goad had 27 assists and Camryn McGrady added eight kills.

Carroll Co. def. Tazewell 3-0: The Cavaliers pulled back to .500 in district play with a 25-23, 25-15, 25-19 win Tuesday in Hillsville.

Ashley Willard led the Cavaliers (9-6, 2-2) with 13 kills and four blocks.  Autumn Fink had 21 service points, two aces and 13 digs. Lexi Hodge added eight kills and four blocks, and Autumn Fink served for 22 points. 

Galax def. Bland Co. 3-0: The Maroon Tide clinched a tie for the MED season championship with a 25-18, 25-10, 25-17 win Thursday.

Allison White put away 10 kills and Bailey Shumate had nine kills and nine assists for Galax (19-1, 8-0). Haley Reynolds served for 13 points for the Tide.
