Fries teen injured in crash

FRIES — A 17-year-old was in critical condition Monday after a single vehicle accident near Fries that morning.

According to Virginia State Trooper J.A. Vaughan, Phillip Matthew Norman of Fries was airlifted by helicopter to Johnson City, Tenn., Monday morning after his vehicle collided with a tree.a

Norman was traveling west on Virginia 274 (Riverside Drive) towards Independence when his 1998 Ford Taurus veered off the left side of the road and struck a tree, according to Vaughan.

The accident happened just before 8 a.m.

Upon arrival, rescue crews found Norman pinned in his car.

Rescue crews worked for more than an hour to free him.

Vaughan said Norman was wearing his seatbelt and air bags were deployed on his vehicle.

Norman was listed in critical condition on Monday with substantial injuries.

Damage was listed at $5,000 and Vaughan said no charges have been placed at this time.

Crews responding included Elk Creek Rescue Squad, Fries Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue, Galax-Grayson EMS and Galax Volunteer Fire Department.
