FRIES — The Fries Recreation Center has hired its first full-time director in years — but didn’t have to search long to find the man for the job.
Randy Shinault was recently named the full-time director. Longing to obtain the position one occupied by his mentor, long-time director Sap Jones, Shinault dreamed of the day he might take over the reins.
At 12-years-old, Shinault began working at the rec center as a pin setter. Since then, he has done everything, from cleaning, mowing grass, umpiring and coaching.
He has held the title of sports director for many years and when the Rec Center Board decided it was time for a full-time director again, the board selected Shinault.
Known around Fries for his dedication to the rec center and the children involved, residents are excited about the possibilities and experience he brings.
Comments such as, “Randy is the best thing we have ever had at the Rec Center,” or, “My kids wouldn’t play for anyone else,” and “Randy puts his heart and soul into the rec center and the community everyday,” are evident that the residents believe he is the right choice for the job.
Shinault is determined that the kids in the Fries community are not going to have anything less than the surrounding communities when it comes to uniforms, equipment, safety devices and opportunity in general.
As one parent commented, “Our kid’s best interest comes first and foremost with Randy. In making decisions, Randy always chooses what is best for the kids.”
Shinault has strict discipline — yet he is equally fair with the kids and the kids respect him for this.
The lessons the kids learn from him carry over into their school-work and relationships in their community.
Services of the rec center include youth sports programs for ages 4-18, a library with a computer lab, cardio room and separate weight room, basketball court, duck pin bowling alley, arcade area with pool and ping-pong tables and video games, an outdoor pool and many more amenities.
The rec center has been referred to as the ‘heartbeat of Fries’ because of all it has to offer the people in the area, and Shinault will be there to see that it is the best it can be.
