Four earn all-state in Group A track

RADFORD ––Galax’s Manuel Echeagaray and Anna Sexton and Grayson County’s Michael Davis and Rosie Kirby placed among the top eight in their respective events and earned all-state status during the Group A track and field championships at Radford University’s Cupp Stadium.

Davis, a senior headed for Lees-McCrae on a cross country scholarship, placed fourth in the 1600 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 35.4 seconds, edging defending state champion Nathan Brame of Radford for the position. He also placed fifth in the 3200 in 10:34.5.

Also for the Blue Devils, Kirby managed to finish eighth in an extremely close 800 final, crossing in 2:34.94, just a half-second out of sixth place.

Echeagary became just the second Galax runner to earn all-state honors in the 1600 with his sixth-place finish, recording a time of 4:42.8.

Sexton became Galax’s first all-state recipient in the high jump, placing eighth with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches.

Josh Fridley missed out by one-tenth of a second a top-eight finish in the 800, placing ninth with a time of 2:06. Marleigh Durham and Nick Phillips also competed for the Maroon Tide.
