MAX MEADOWS –– Carroll County battled back from a 10-point deficit to trail Floyd County just 40-39 midway through the third period, but the Buffaloes answered with a 9-0 run and sent the Cavaliers to the bottom bracket of the Wythe County Christmas Tournament with a 71-55 win Friday at Fort Chiswell High School.

Carroll County (1-7) trailed 39-29 early in the third quarter before stringing together a 10-1 run. James Lanning knocked down a big 3-pointer in the rally, and Tyler Reavis’ bucket off a backdoor pass from Isaiah Thompson pulled the Cavaliers to within 40-39 with 4:24 left in the third.

A 3-pointer by Tucker Crawford ignited the Buffaloes (5-1), who scored nine unanswered points over the next 2:07 to push the gap back to 10 points, 49-39. Floyd would win for the fifth straight time since an opening-night loss.

“We tried to just put more pressure on them defensively, and we were doing a pretty good job,” Cavalier coach Brad Hawks said. “They were making turnovers, and then they kind of got smart to it and got us on the back door a couple of times, and before you know it they were up 10 again.”

Carroll County opened the fourth with a 5-2 spurt and cut the margin to 46-53 with 5:59 to go on a Lanning foul shot, but the Cavaliers would get no closer the rest of the night. Zack Yates and Nathan Coartney each completed three-point plays as the Buffaloes finished the night with an 18-9 run.

“I just don’t feel like the kids played as hard tonight as they’ve been playing, and that bothers me,” Hawks said. “We’ve had the last day and a half off, and that doesn’t help, but it’s the same thing for everybody else.”

A Reavis 3-pointer and a free throw from Thompson had Carroll County leading 10-6 early on, but Crawford’s trey at 2:34 of the first sparked a 16-4 run that ended with Coartney’s 3-pointer for a 22-14 Floyd lead early in the second. The margin grew to 10 points when Brett Holman picked off one of several poor Cavalier passes and threaded an assist to Bogan Franklin for a layup and a 36-26 lead 1:23 before the half.

Yates and Peters led five Buffaloes in double figures with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Crawford scored 14, Holman added 11 and Coartney chipped in 10.

Reavis led Carroll with 16. Lanning and Will Jones added 13 and 11.
