The Galax Volunteer Fire Department was called to an explosion at Turman Hardwood Flooring on Boyer Road in the city at 10:29 p.m. last Thursday evening.
Firefighters found the explosion contained in the dust collection sytem. “The explosion was caused by fine dust particles within the processing equipment used in the manufacturing of wood pellets,” explained Fire Chief David Hankley on Friday.
Firefighters extinguished several small flames on the exterior and interior of the wood pellet plant. The damage appeared to be contained in one area, according to a firefighter at the scene.
Hankley said the damage was limited to the duct work outside of the manufacturing plant. No one was injured in the explosion.
The department cleared the scene at approximately 11:36 p.m.
The plant was open and operating again on Friday morning, said Hankley. In addition to hardwood flooring, the plant makes wood pellets that are burned as fuel in stoves.
