The Galax Volunteer Fire Department responded to a multi-structure and brush fire on March 17, which involved several outbuildings and a main residence on the property.
According to a report from Fire Chief David Hankley, the department was initially dispatched for a brush fire on Bowling Lane in Galax. “While in route, we were notified that it was a garage fire,” he said.
On arrival, firefighters found approximately 20 acres of brush on fire, along with one barn, two outbuildings, one garage and one house.
The homeowner, Ken Walker, was burning a small pile of yard debris when it began getting out of control. The pile was located between two of the buildings and spread in both directions, Hankley said.
“Mr. Walker attempted to put it out but was unable to.”
All of the structures, aside from the main residence, were completely destroyed by the fires, along with a car and tractor, both of which were parked in the garage.
There was also a pickup inside the garage, which suffered heat damage but was saved from being a total loss.
The home withstood the least amount of damage from the fire, with some damage to the porch, melted siding and broken windows on one side, according to the report.
