The Galax Volunteer Fire Department was called to a structure fire in Baywood on Monday evening.
According to a report from Fire Chief David Hankley, the department heard the call to 1465 Cold Spring Lane at approximately 9:30 p.m. On arrival, firefighters found a single-story residence with fire consuming half of the building.
The home was owned and occupied by Robert Ring. “The owner stated that he was at home and smelled smoke coming from a bedroom. Upon opening the door, he reported that the area around the bed and wall was on fire,” Hankley said.
The home had a metal roof, which stopped the fire from venting upwards. Instead, the flames spread out under the roof, causing extensive fire, heat and smoke damage, Hankley explained.
The fire department responded with approximately five trucks and 26 firefighters.
Baywood Search and Rescue provided EMS coverage.
