Several fire departments collaborated to fight a large structure fire off of Skyline Highway/U.S. 58 south of Galax on Saturday.

According to a report from Galax Fire Chief David Hankley, the Galax Volunteer Fire Department received a call about a commercial structure fire on 89 South in the Fairview community at 2:45 a.m. Saturday.
The building was owned by Danny Smith and occupied by Hershel Brewer, who was using it as an auto body shop, Hankley said.
Firefighters arrived to find the building fully consumed in flames, and approximately 50 percent of the structure destroyed.
Assisted by Skull Camp, N.C., and the Fries fire departments, firefighters spent four hours battling the blaze before clearing the scene.
“I am extremely proud of the performance of GFD crews during this morning’s fire. [They] overcame multiple challenges for a safe outcome,” said Galax Fire Capt. Mike Ayers in a message on the fire department’s Twitter page later that morning. He extended a special thanks to the departments that assisted, as well.
The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time, Hankley said.
