HILLSVILLE — Authorities received a report of an accidental fatal shooting at 70 Rippey Hollow Road in Pipers Gap involving a 29-year-old man last Wednesday.
Law enforcement got the call just before 9 p.m., according to Carroll Sheriff J.B. Gardner.
Police identify the man killed as Kevin Heath Frazier.
The deceased had a gunshot wound to the head that appeared to be fired from a relatively close range, Gardner confirmed to The Gazette. Deputies recovered a 9 mm handgun at the scene.
Gardner declined to release the woman’s name. She is cooperating with the investigation, he said.
The sheriff confirmed the two people involved have a romantic history.
There appears to have been a physical confrontation going on at the time of the incident, at an exterior door to the house, Gardner said. “There’s some kind of confrontation between the two at the door. At some point, the gun went off.”
The woman tried to administer first aid to Frazier, the sheriff said.
“Investigators from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and special agents of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations worked the crime scene,” according to a news release. “Evidence from the scene will be taken to the State Forensic Lab in Roanoke for further analysis.”
An autopsy will be performed at the state medical examiner’s office in Roanoke, as required by state law.
The results will help investigators and the Carroll commonwealth’s attorney make a decision about possible charges, Gardner said.
A funeral will be held today, Monday, at 2 p.m. at Twin County Funerals Sanctuary. Burial will follow at Melton Cemetery.
