FANCY GAP — National Park Service rangers continue to investigate a possible cause in a fatal wreck Sept. 25 near the 192 mile marker of the Blue Ridge Parkway, involving a 70-year-old Ararat man.
The incident occurred at about 10:15 a.m., when Bobby Ray Caviness was driving a vehicle north on the parkway, not far from the Willis Gap area at the Carroll and Patrick county line, according to Ranger Bobby Miller.
At that time, Caviness’ vehicle crossed the center line and struck a 33-foot recreational vehicle, almost head on.
Caviness was pronounced dead at the scene. Miller said the two occupants of the RV, German residents traveling the parkway, were not injured.
Caviness was transported to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. Miller said health issues may have contributed to the wreck.
