By Staff Reports

ABINGDON –– A two-out, three-run rally in the third inning put Abingdon on top to stay and the Falcons held off Carroll County 7-5 in a Southwest District baseball game Tuesday night.

With the game tied at 2-2, nobody on and two outs, Abingdon ninth-place hitter Austin Dove kept the inning going with a single, and leadoff man Jacob Meade tripled to center to drive in the go-ahead run. Meade scored on Travis Shrewsbury’s single, and Shrewsbury later scored on a wild pitch for a 5-2 Falcons lead.

Aaron Hooven singled home Brandon Lineberry, and Isaac Sumner crossed on a double steal to pull the Cavaliers to within a 5-4 score in the fifth, but Abingdon pushed two more runs across in the sixth for a 7-4 advantage.

Ryan Gravley singled and scored on Sumner’s ground-out in the seventh for the Cavaliers, who couldn’t complete the comeback.

Hooven doubled to drive in Lineberry in the first, and Jordan Worrell doubled, scoring on Gravley’s single in the second for a 2-0 Cavalier lead after two. Abingdon knotted the game in the third on two walks and three singles.

Gravley, Hooven and Worrell had two hits apiece for Carroll County (6-7 overall, 0-2 district) while Meade was 4-for-4 for the Falcons.
