Galax girls nipped J.I. Burton to cap a perfect 3-for-3 effort by Twin County teams in state quarterfinal basketball games Friday and Saturday.
The Maroon Tide, Carroll County’s girls and Galax’s boys will all play next week in Richmond in their respective state semifinals.
Galax’s boys got the ball rolling Friday night with a 53-44 win over Castlewood in the Group A Division 1 quarterfinals. Deion George had 19 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Tide, which faces Charles City at 5 p.m. Thursday at VCU.
Saturday morning in Salem, Carroll County’s girls held Staunton River scoreless in the third quarter and gave up 13 points through three periods of a 42-27 win in the Group AA Division 4 quarterfinals. Lindsay Martin scored 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for Carroll, which plays defending Division 3 champion Millbrook at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Richmond.
Just a few hours later, Galax eliminated defending state champion J.I. Burton 46-45 at Virginia High in Bristol. J.I. The Raiders had ousted Galax in the state quarterfinals a year ago en route to the state title. The Maroon Tide will face either East Rockingham or Appomattox Regional Governor’s School in its semifinal Thursday morning at 11 a.m.
