The Galax Police Department arrested a man on Christmas Day and charged him with a number of traffic offenses, including driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving and two counts of felony hit and run, according to a report from Police Chief Rick Clark.

Juan Carlos Rivas, 33, of Galax was arrested by Officer Darrin Alley after police were dispatched to Bryn Mawr Drive in Galax at 2:34 a.m. on Christmas morning, where a vehicle had struck two mobile homes.
Alley discovered at the scene that mobile homes occupied by Amaya M. Ramos and Jessica Wilson had been struck by an automobile and that the driver had fled the scene, Clark said.
Sgt. Danita Jackson discovered Rivas walking on Cranberry Road, and transported him back to the scene of the accidents.
The mobile homes suffered more than $1,000 in damages, resulting in felony charges, Clark said.
Rivas is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail pending his appearance in Galax General District Court.
