Driver leads police on chase

A man, who was allegedly driving recklessly on South Main Street in Galax, led police on a chase into Alleghany County, N.C., on Monday afternoon.

After crashing on Glade Valley Road, at the intersection of Barrett Road, in Alleghany County, Jonathan Scott Eggert, 25, of Grandview Drive, Sparta, N.C., was arrested and will be charged in Virginia with DUI, reckless driving, eluding police, leaving the scene of the accident and property damage for striking a stop sign at U.S. 58 and West Stuart Drive in Galax.

At 5:35 p.m. on Monday, Galax police began receiving numerous reports of a vehicle operating recklessly in Galax. Galax Police Officer Bill Shaffner observed the vehicle and attempted to stop the suspect for driving under the influence.

The vehicle failed to stop and continued north onto McArthur Street through West Galax toward the Oldtown section of Grayson County. The vehicle continued to operate recklessly and was pursued back onto 58 and onto Meadow Creek Road.

The vehicle traveled into Alleghany County, where the driver crashed. He was transported to Alleghany Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the crash and charges in North Carolina are pending. Extradition to Virginia will be sought when North Carolina charges are resolved.

Galax Police were assisted by the Grayson County Sheriff's Office, Alleghany County Sheriff's Office, Glade Creek Fire Department and North Carolina Highway Patrol.
