Cornerstone Church makes prom affordable for all

By April Wright, Reporter

While many teen girls dream about going to the prom, for some the cost is just too high.
Jennifer Morris of Cornerstone Community Church came up with the idea for the church to host a prom dress drive to allow girls to purchase a dress for $20 that they might otherwise wouldn't be able to afford.
Cornerstone Community Church, in downtown Galax, has been asking girls to donate their gently used prom dresses, shoes and accessories to the drive to help make others' dreams come true.
“This helps girls who can't afford to spend $200 on a dress,” said Morris, who works with the church's youth and whose husband, Mike, is the pastor. “This provides an outreach to help the community. With the economy the way it is, many aren't able to go to prom.”
So far, over the past two weeks, the church has collected 30 prom dresses. Morris is hoping to have enough for the number of girls that show up.
“This is our first time hosting the prom drive, so we're not sure what or how many to expect,” said Morris. “Our goal is to have about 50 or 60 prom dresses of the current style and of all sizes.”
“Say Yes to the Dress: Prom Edition,” as it's being called, will be open to all area high school students. On March 11 from 6-10 p.m. and March 12 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., teens in need of a prom dress can come to Cornerstone at 227 S. Main St. in Galax, to shop for a dress.
All dresses will be $20, and the money will be used for door prizes, dry cleaning and treat bags. The funds that are left over will go back to the church's youth group outreach fund.
High school girls will be able to shop for a dress, shoes and accessories, try on the dress and register for door prizes.
“It'll be just like they're going shopping,” said Morris. “Lots of fun.”
Door prizes will include prizes for hair, makeup, nails, dinner and pictures for prom night. Donors are Rayzors, Hair Classics, Haynes Dry Cleaners, Chestnut Creek Coffee House, Merle Norman and Winterberry Gallery.

The church will be accepting donations up to the day of the event of all current styles, sizes and colors and sizes. Plus-size dresses and shoes are needed. Tax-deductible receipts are available upon request in exchange for a donated dress.
