Mother Nature was not on her best behavior during our recent Trail Ride for the Red Cross.
It had started out as a lovely Sunday fundraiser for the Wood’s River Chapter (which serves Carroll, Grayson, and Wythe counties and Galax).
However, fair skies suddenly turned to dangerously stormy conditions, and we were forced to recall our horses and riders from the trails due to safety concerns.
Happily, everyone — riders, horses, and volunteers — found safe shelter. However, the event had to be cancelled.
The next part of the story has to do with human nature!
Each participant generously offered to leave their entry fees as a donation to the Red Cross, even though they were deprived of a full day of activities.
I was so impressed by this gesture, and the funds that were raised can still go to disaster, health, and safety needs in our community.
Riders, thank you so much.
We also express gratitude to the individuals and merchants who sponsored the event.
