Devils pull away from Chilhowie, Cavs drop Floyd Co.

CHILHOWIE –– Grayson County scored six runs in the fifth inning to break open a close ballgame and defeated defending Division 2 state runner-up Chilhowie 10-6 in a nondistrict game Friday.

The Blue Devils (1-0) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first but saw the Warriors (1-1) draw even in the third. After scoring a single run in the fourth, Grayson put together its six-run rally in the fifth, highlighted by Dylan Isom’s two-run double.

Isom and Landon Frost both were 3-for-4 and Max Rodgers had two hits, including a triple. Isom was also the winning pitcher, working into the fifth. Ty Cannaday finished things off on the mound for the Blue Devils.

Carroll County 5, Floyd County 1: The Cavaliers got a strong pitching performance from Seth Burris and scored a single run in five separate innings to knock off the Buffaloes in a nondistrict game Wednesday at Bill Worrell Field.

Burris threw five shutout innings, giving up just two hits, to earn the pitching win. He struck out one and walked one.

Offensively the Cavaliers used a series of mini-rallies, scoring a run in each of the first three innings, plus the fifth and sixth.

Burris and Reece Edwards both went 3-for-3 and Edwards scored two runs for Carroll.

Pulaski County 9, Grayson County 8: The Cougars did all their damage in the top of the second and held off the Blue Devils in a nondistrict game Tuesday in Independence.

Pulaski used six hits, four walks and an error to push nine runs across, erasing a 2-0 Grayson lead.

The Blue Devils battled back with three run rallies in the fifth and sixth, but left the tying run in scoring position both times.

Max Rodgers, Dylan Isom and Landon Frost had two hits apiece for Grayson County.


Carroll County 10, Patrick County 9: Eden Durnil slugged a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to cap a six-run comeback, leading to the nondistrict win last Thursday in Stuart.

Carroll (1-1) trailed 9-3 after three innings but Gracie Davidson shut out the Cougars in the last four innings as the Cavaliers began their comeback.

Durnil was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Davidson, Ragan Halsey, Autumn Hill and Cheyenne Strickland added two hits each.


Galax 3, Floyd County 0: Mario Carranza, Junior Espinosa and Andres Medina each scored for the Maroon Tide as it improved to 2-0 on the year in a nondistrict match Tuesday in Galax. Mesiel Solis stopped four shots in goal for Galax.

Galax 4, Pulaski County 0: The Maroon Tide opened its season March 13 with a shutout win over the Cougars in Galax. Miguel Lopez, Edgar Guzman, Espinosa and Carranza all scored for Galax.


Galax 1, Floyd County 0: The Maroon Tide picked up its first win of the season after an 0-2 start, edging the Buffaloes in a nondistrict match Tuesday in Galax.

Alex Moreno scored the match’s only goal, connecting on a penalty kick in the final minute of play. Floyd County had two penalty kicks stopped by Tide keeper Cecelia Soto, who had 10 saves in all.
